Recommended Criticism
Wadlington, Warwick.
As I Lay Dying: Stories
out of Stories. Twayne
Masterwork Studies No. 102. New York: Twayne, 1992.
This is an excellent study of the novel.
Wadlington approaches the novel from a number of perspectives,
beginning with an examination of the social milieu in which the
novel is set, and proceeds to examine critics perceptions
of the novel. His chief concern is for the sociology and culture
depicted in the novel: what is meant by “family,”
why the Bundrens journey is such an “outrage”
to the community, and how the “master cultural story”
of economics influences the actions and events in the novel.
