Van Dorn.
-
Van Dorn, General
Earl ("Buck"): (September 17, 1820-May 7, 1863) A
Confederate general famed for daring raids of both military and domestic
natures. He demonstrated the former in December 1862 in Holly
Springs, Mississippi. Earlier that year, Union Brigadier General Ulysses
S. Grant had begun moving munitions and supplies down the Mississippi
Central Railroad toward Vicksburg, a key
fortification on the Mississippi
River. By the middle of November, he had established a supplies and
munitions depot in Holly Springs before moving on to establish a
headquarters in Oxford, some thirty
miles further south. On December 20, 1862, Van Dorn led a cavalry force of
3,500 into Holly Springs, surprising the Federal forces there, burning the
depot, and capturing some 1,500 Union soldiers. The humiliating loss set
back Grant's Vicksburg campaign for months, while it elevated Van Dorn to
heroic status to his fellow Mississippians. Later, a "raid" of a
decidedly different sort led Van Dorn to very different results, when he was
killed by a Dr. Peter after Van Dorn had consorted with Dr. Peter's wife.
Faulkner alludes to Van Dorn's raid on Grant's stores in Sartoris/Flags
in the Dust and, more significantly, in Light
in August, in which Faulkner changes the setting to Jefferson
and has the Rev. Hightower's
grandfather die during the raid. Faulkner alludes to both the raid and Van
Dorn's ironic death in Absalom, Absalom!. He
is referred to several times in The Unvanquished.

Vicksburg, Mississippi: An
actual city on the Mississippi
River, just downstream from where the Yazoo
River empties into the Mississippi. Located on high bluffs overlooking a
sharp bend in the river, Vicksburg was a key Confederate stronghold on the
river and the goal of a lengthy military campaign by the Union Army during
the Civil War. The city surrendered to Union General Ulysses
S. Grant on July 4, 1863, following a 47-day siege in which many of the
town's inhabitants came close to starvation. The city is referred to in The
Unvanquished, Go Down, Moses, and
the "Old Man" portions of If I Forget
Thee, Jerusalem [The Wild Palms].
