The Title

While writing the book, Faulkner titled it "The Horse Stealers: A Reminiscence," but changed it to "The Reavers," from the word "reave": "to rob, plunder, or pillage." Still not satisfied, he wrote his editor at Random House to suggest a further variation:

"I have finished the mss. and will send it along in a day or so. The title for what they are doing would be

The Stealers.

The title I have now is

The Reavers

But there is a old Scottish spelling which I like better:

The Rievers (maybe Reivers)

This sounds more active, swashing, than Reavers, which is the American word meaning the same, but it sounds too peaceful, bucolic: too much like Weavers. Will you see about Rievers (Reivers) if we can use that form?"

(Blotner, Selected Letters 456)
