David Warren Steel

I teach music and southern culture at the University of Mississippi. My wife Anne teaches Latin at Oxford Middle School here in Oxford, Mississippi. We both enjoy Sacred Harp singing, as you can see from this YouTube clip. I attended Harvard College and the University of Michigan. I teach courses in music history, ethnomusicology, and applied organ and harpsichord; I am also co-director of the Mississippi Early Music Ensemble and I perform with the “Mockingbird” early music ensemble. My edition of the collected works of American composer Daniel Belknap (1771-1818) was recently issued by Garland Publications; another edition, of the works of Stephen Jenks (1772-1856), was published by A-R Editions in 1995. My organ CD Baroque Pearls was just issued on Centaur Records. You can find information about my publications, research, and other activities in my curriculum vitae.

Since learning about networked information systems at the Mississippi Center for Supercomputing Research (MCSR), I have set up World Wide Web sites for the Department of Music and for Sacred Harp singing. You’re welcome to enjoy some of my favorite net-spots.
