College Hill Church: This Presbyterian church was founded in 1836, with the present building dating back to 1844 on land bought from North Mississippi College, for which the community derived its name. The college has long since closed, but the church still has an active congregation. During the Civil War, the church was occupied by Union troops, and in 1929, William Faulkner and Estelle Oldham Franklin were supposedly married here because the Fa(u)lkner family's regular church, St. Peter's Episcopal Church in Oxford, wouldn't marry them because Estelle was divorced. At least one scholar has raised questions in recent years as to whether the Faulkners were actually married here or nearby in a private residence. Regardless, the church is the closest model for the church in which Thomas Sutpen and Ellen Coldfield in Absalom, Absalom! were married. |
