Information about the 28th Annual Faulkner and Yoknapatawpha Conference: "Faulkner and War" to be held July 22-27, 2001 |
Each summer, the English Department and the Center for the Study of Southern Culture at the University of Mississippi host a week-long conference devoted to the study and appreciation of William Faulkner. Scholars, students, and Faulkner fans from around the world converge on Oxford, Faulkner’s hometown, for the event in order to better understand both the writings of William Faulkner and the world in which he lived. Dramatic readings of Faulkner, tours of the area, the awarding (and reading) of the winning "Faux Faulkner" Contest entry — that is, the best imitation of Faulkner’s inimitable style of writing — and panel discussions about William Faulkner by friends and family members who knew him are among the week's activities. By and large, though, the Faulkner and Yoknapatawpha Conference is an academic affair: lectures about Faulkner by renowned scholars in a variety of academic disciplines. The first Faulkner conference was held in Oxford in 1974, and it proved so popular that the whole thing was repeated for a second week. Beginning in 1976, the conferences began a thematic approach, in which each conference would solicit essays in a particular area or field of study pertaining to Faulkner. Over the years, the conference has addressed a variety of themes affording scholars in many fields of discipline, not just literary study, to expand our understanding and appreciation of Faulkner. The 24th Annual Faulkner and Yoknapatawpha Conference, Faulkner at 100: Retrospect and Prospect, was held at the University of Mississippi July 27-August 1, 1997. This, the centennial conference, was without a doubt the largest gathering of Faulkner scholars from around the world. Among the paper presenters, panel discussion participants, and even a few surprise guests, were Joseph Blotner, David Minter, Michael Millgate, Doreen Fowler, André Bleikasten, Thadious M. Davis, Arthur Kinney, General Joseph L. Fant, Lothar Hönnighausen, Judith Wittenberg, Warwick Wadlington, Caroline Porter, Judith Sensibar, John T. Matthews, and Noel Polk. You can read more about the centennial conference in this article in the Center for the Study of Southern Culture's newsletter, The Southern Register. Other articles about the Faulkner centennial are also in this, the Summer 1997 issue. The proceedings from this conference are scheduled to be published in October 2000. The 25th Annual Faulkner and Yoknapatawpha Conference, Faulkner in America, was held at the University of Mississippi July 26-31, 1998. Publication of the conference proceedings is forthcoming from the University Press of Mississippi. The 26th Annual Faulkner and Yoknapatawpha Conference, Faulkner and Postmodernism, was held at the University of Mississippi July 25-30, 1999. The 27th Annual Faulkner and Yoknapatawpha Conference, Faulkner in the 21st Century, was held July 23-28, 2000. Speakers at the conference included Deborah N. Cohn, Leigh Anne Duck, Robert Hamblin, Michael Kreyling, Barbara Ladd, Walter Benn Michaels, Patarick O’Donnell, Theresa Towner, Annette Trefzer, and Karl F. Zender, with a reading by fiction writer Larry Brown. Go to the conference web site for additional information about the 2000 conference. The 28th Annual Faulkner and Yoknapatawpha Conference, Faulkner and War, will be held July 22-27, 2001, at the University of Mississippi. Anyone who wishes to attend may register for the conference. Visit the official conference web site for more information and a printable registration form. Published Conference ProceedingsWith the exception of the first two conferences, the lectures presented at each conference have been published in book form by the University Press of Mississippi. Selected essays from the first conference in 1974 and the second in 1975 were published in the journal University of Mississippi Studies in English, volumes 14 (1976) and 15 (1978), respectively. Published editions of recent conference proceedings are forthcoming. These listings are the titles of the published books of conference proceedings; hence, they may not match verbatim the publicized themes for individual conferences. The links for each title below lead to complete bibliographical information for the published volume, including in some cases a complete table of contents for that volume.
